Psychiatry Residency Rotation
The Ohio State University Counseling and Consultation Service provides Psychiatry Residents with the opportunity for an outpatient experience focused on the mental health of university students.
One or two positions a year are available for Post Graduate Year IV Residents, or PGY III Residents with six months outpatient experience, from the OSU Department of Psychiatry. These are four or six-month rotations for ten hours per week. Of this time, approximately 60% is devoted to direct service, 20% to a variety of training opportunities (including 60 to 90 minutes per week of individual supervision from Senior Staff Psychiatrists), and 20% to various case management functions.
The major emphasis of the psychiatry rotation is individual psychotherapy in the context of medication management. The focus of psychotherapy is short-term treatment, mirroring the priority of the agency. Other training opportunities include participation in a Case Conference with trainees from other mental health disciplines (Psychology, Counseling, and Social Work), attending a Mental Skills workshop, and consultation with physicians from OSU Student Health Center. Residents may also meet individually with Senior Staff Psychologists, Social Workers, and Counselors to discuss particular areas of interest such as gender and sexuality, substance abuse, diversity issues, victimization, trauma, or eating disorders.
Interested Residents are selected by the Training Director in The Ohio State University Department of Psychiatry and meet with Senior Staff Psychiatrists at the Counseling and Consultation Service for an interview at least four to six weeks prior to beginning the rotation.
