Consultation & Assessment Team

This is an informal consultation team that reports to the Vice President of Student Affairs. Permanent members include Louise Douce Director of Counseling and Consultation Service and Chair, Ron Michalec Chief of OSU Police, Pat Hall Director of Student Judicial Affairs and John Reilly, Legal Affairs. 

Consultation meetings are held at the request of OSU Faculty or staff who are concerned about the behavior of a student that is potentially dangerous to others or extremely disruptive.  Often the behavior is perceived to have a mental illness root. Meetings consist of the four core members and faculty and staff from all the units impacted by the behavior.  Usually more than one unit is experiencing disruptive behavior from the same student.

Charge:

  • ASSESS SITUATIONS INVOLVING STUDENTS WHO POSE A POTENTIAL RISK OF HARM TO PERSONS OR PROPERTY IN THE UNIVERSITY COMMUNITY OR OF SUBSTANTIAL DISRUPTION OF UNIVERSITY ACTIVITIES
  • CONSULT WITH FACULTY STAFF AND STUDENTS INVOLVED IN OR AFFECTED BY THE SITUATION
  • COORDINATE THE UNIVERSITY RESPONSE TO VIOLENT, THREATENING, OR SIGNIFICANTLY DISRUPTIVE STUDENTS
  • MAKE RECOMMENDATIONS TO OFFICIALS ON APPROPRIATE ACTION CONSISTENT WITH UNIVERSITY RULES AND POLICIES

Potential Outcomes:

Develop a specific strategy to manage the situation with regard to safety for others, safety to the student and minimize disruption to the community.  Issues include assessment of potential violence, containment of disruption, referral for the perceived core problem, and setting appropriate behavioral boundaries within the existing policies and procedures of a department or unit.

If appropriate, the team may suggest enactment of one of the following faculty rules using the “least restrictive resolution?principle:

3335-7-33 Disenrollment from a course

3335-23-20 Interim suspension

3335-23-21 Administrative disenrollment

3335-9-08 Withdrawal for medical reasons

Judicial action or legal action as appropriate.

Police presence provided for a difficult meeting, perceived safety concerns or any appropriate purpose. 

Communication links established to keep all persons informed of unfolding events and resolutions. A team member is designated to follow each case to resolution.

Contacts:

Faculty and staff may contact the person below who seems the most appropriate for the situation. That person may resolve the situation with an individual consultation within the scope of their unit or they may suggest a Case Consultation and Assessment Team meeting.
